13 Bird's Nest Fern

Aspenium nidus (Bird's Nest Fern, Nest fern) is a common houseplant with a large leafy form. It is found largely in Singapore. It has the ability to create its own humus and trap water enabling it to grow in soilless conditions. It has medicinal properties and is eaten by an aboriginal tribe in Malaysia and eaten in Japan and Taiwan as well. It is native to east tropical Africa, temperate and tropical Asia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand, and Australia.

A tea of the leaves has been used to treat ease labor pains, sore throat, sores, asthma, weakness, and hygienically to treat halitosis.. A lotion is made to treat fever. It is a protected species in Hong Kong.

Bird's Nest Fern grows best in filtered light and shade. They need water regularly to keep the soil moist. They fair best in temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They prefer rich, loose, organic soil. They may be fertilized during growing season every week or two with liquid fertilizer. Be careful not to put the fertilizer on the pellets in the central cup.
